Review of South Africans in London - By Brenda Daniels

15th December 2008

South Africans in London contains a series of personal interviews with South Africans who are living and working in London. Interviewees range in age from their early twenties to their late forties. Some have children, others don’t. Some individuals have moved to London permanently, while others have simply gone for the adventure.

Most are professional people with degrees and some have their own businesses. Each interview covers topics like public transport in London, the weather, job opportunities, the cost of living, travel, accommodation, visas and the social life. Many of the South Africans have retained their South African connections and are part of local clubs or organisations. Others are more integrated into the British community.

Perceptions of the South African job market and political climate are also discussed at great length. A number of the interviewees are particularly frank in this regard. Crime is a huge issue, as is affirmative action. Many viewpoints are particularly sobering.

Without exception, however, each interview is enlightening, entertaining and very, very interesting. South Africans of all ages and stages will enjoy this unique and helpful book.

Gary, I enjoyed your book so much and I want to share it with my friends. I am originally from the Acadiana area (Cajun land as some people call it!)...lots of Zydeco, Blues and cajun music here! Check out this wonderful festival that we have that brings the world to our little area...Its called Festival Internationale http://www.festivalinternational.com. It occurs at the end of April each year. There are two groups from SA that will be performing this year. I am looking forward to seeing them! The Festival attracts 'acts' from all over the world. This isn't a sales pitch for the festival :)...just wanted to share a little about the area that I am from. Thank you again for writing such an interesting book. Not only am I learning about South Africa, but I am also learning about London. Best of luck to you!
